As Merritt’s cavalry moved forward to skirmish with the Confederate line and pin it in place Sheridan met with Warren near Gravelly Run Church to form the infantry for a flank attack. Usually the roles would be reversed, with the more mobile cavalry moving around the flank and the harder-hitting infantry attacking the line. But Sheridan was confident that his cavalry, armed with repeaters and veterans of face to face fighting with Confederate infantry in the Shenandoah Valley, could stand up to Pickett’s men. His main worry was hurrying the slow-paced, exhausted infantry and Warren himself, who the frantically impatient Sheridan felt was apathetic and indifferent.
