The Battle of New Market A28 Virginia historical marker is just north of New Market, Virginia. It was erected in 1929 by the Virginia Conservation & Development Commission. The marker is next to a set of two Battle of New Market Circle Tour markers.

A 28
Battle of New Market
On the hills to the north took place
the Battle of New Market, May 15,
1864. The Union army, under General
Franz Sigel, faced southwest. John
C. Breckinridge, once Vice-President
of the United States, commanded the
Confederates. Colonel Scott Shipp
commanded the Cadet Corps of the
Virginia Military Institute, which
distinguished itself, capturing a
battery. The battle ended in Sigel’s
retreat northward.

The marker is on the west side of the Valley Pike (U.S. 11) on the north edge of New Market, Virginia. (38°39’44.4″N 78°39’47.1″W)
