Battle of South Mountain • Turner’s Gap • Fox’s Gap • Crampton’s Gap
Four and a half miles south of Fox’s Gap as the crow flies and almost eight miles by road, Crampton’s Gap was held by a small Confederate force that covered the rear of McLaw’s Division while it attacked the Union garrison at Harpers Ferry. On the afternoon of September 14 the thinly spread Confederates faced the entire Union 6th Corps.
