The monument to the 3rd Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry Regiment is in the southwest corner of Winchester National Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia. (see map below) The granite monument is topped with a horse shoe and the bas-relief of a horse’s head. On the front are the crossed sabers symbol of the Cavalry. On the rear is the symbol of the 19th Army Corps.
The Third Massachusetts Cavalry fought in the Shenandoah Valley under the command of Colonel Lorenzo D. Sargent. They had been dismounted just before the Nineteenth Corps left Louisiana and were attached as infantry to the Second Brigade of the Second Division of the Nineteenth Army Corps. The Third Massachusetts got their horses back in February of 1865.

Location of the monument
Winchester National Cemetery is on the east side of Winchester, Virginia. It is about 3/4 mile east of the center of town and one mile west of exit 315 of Interstate 81 on National Avenue, Virginia Route 7. (39°11’05.8″N 78°09’22.7″W) A short driveway leads through the entry gate on the north side of the cemetery to a very small parking area next to the superintendant’s lodge. The monument is in the southwest quadrant of the cemetery.
