where fell
George T. Stovall
of the Rome Light Guards,
8th Regt. Georgia Volunteers
in the battle of July 21, 1861.
Born at Augusta, GA, April 25, 1835.

His life he devoted to his God 
and sacrificed in his country’s defence.
His last words were I am going to
heaven.

Location of the George T. Stovall monument

The monument is along the Matthews Hill Loop Trail, which starts at the Matthews Hill parking area on the east side of Sudley Road, Virginia Route 234, about 0.7 mile north of US 29. It is on the part of the trail that runs into the woods along the east side of the field, about 570 yards from the parking area. (38°49’36.5″N 77°31’41.3″W)
