There are several styles of historical markers on Petersburg battlefield.

Wayside markers at Petersburg National Battlefield Park

The most common at Petersburg are wayside markers (above). Using modern color printing technlogy, these markers can display written information, colored maps, photographs and period drawings to tell a relatively complex story about a battlefield event. Some wayside markers at Peresburg are equipped with audio presentations powered by solar panels. The panels and the bricked-in bases covering the equipment show which these are.

Trailhead marker and orientation display at Petersburg National Historical Park

Markers in a vertical format are used for both trailhead markers and orientation displays (above). The smaller trailhead markers are placed at the beginning of walking trails and have information about the significance of the trail as well as the trail’s length and walking time.

The much larger orientation dislays provide a broad background overview of events for a particular time. At Petersburg they show the progression of the military situation in the Richmond-Petersburg area.

A few older style metal markers (above) highlight battlefield features in the park.
