About Hartranft’s Pennsylvania Division

In the fall of 1864 six new Pennsylvania infantry regiments were organized into a division of two brigades under John H. Hartranft and assigned as the Third Division of the Ninth Corps. The division played a major role in the Battle of Fort Stedman, when it moved up from a reserve position to counterattacked and recapture the fort. Hartranft was brevetted Major General for his role in the battle.
