General Thomas J. Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign had been underway for two and a half months before the final battle outside Port Republic, Virginia on June 9. 1862. Using speed, maneuver and deception, Jackson’s small army had prevented Union forces that were several times his own strength from reinforcing McClellan’s drive on Richmond. The only question now was if his force would survive being cornered between two stronger armies.
But ‘Stonewall’ turned his central position into an advantage, attacked each of his attackers in turn while using the Shenandoah River as a shield to prevent them from uniting. Both pursuers withdrew with bloody noses, leaving Jackson free to leave the Valley and add his forces to the defenders of Richmond.
