Battles of Manassas • Tour the Battlefield •  Monuments • The Armies

Stop 6 of the Manassas Battlefield Driving Tour is the Unfinished Railroad. The railroad had been intended to be an extension of the Manassas Gap Railroad to Alexandria that would have allowed traffic to avoid be transferred to the Orange & Alexandria Railroad. The war ended the plans. Instead, Jackson’s Confederates took advantage of the roadbed as a field fortification, which were the target of repeated savage but unsuccessful assaults in the 1962 battle. After the war the two railroads merged, and the rail line was never built.
