Battles of Manassas • Tour the Battlefield •  Monuments • The Armies

The Deep Cut is Stop 7 of the Manassas Battlefield Driving Tour. The Deep Cut trail starts here and crosses the area of the Union advance, then follows the Confederate defences on the line of the Unfinished Railroad before returning to the parking area.

The Deep Cut is a continuation of the Unfinished Railroad at Stop Six. During the 1862 battle Federal troops assaulted Jackson’s men here in a series of desperate assaults that sometimes came down to hand to hand fighting. When ammunition ran out troops even threw rocks at the enemy. In the end the Confederate lines held and the badly bloodied Federal attackers were swept away by Longstreet’s counterattack when he reached the field.
