The Chancellorsville battlefield is ten miles west of Fredericksburg, Virginia, along Virginia Highway 3. The heart of the battlefield is protected by the Chancellorsville National Battlefield Park.

Two auto tour routes allow a visitor to explore the Chancellorsville battlefield by car. Pull-outs, wayside markers, and other interpretive signs help the visitor understand what happened on the field during the battle.

Chancellorsville Battlefield Auto Tour

The Auto Tour covers the heart of the battlefield. The tour begins at the National Park Visitor Center along Virginia Route 3. It takes the visitor through ten Tour Stops that cover the main areas of the battle on May 1-3. Tour Stops are marked with round signs with the number of the stop, and have parking areas and interpretive markers. Many of the stops are trailheads for walking tours. Historical markers in between the main tour stops provide additional information about the battle.

Jackson’s Flank March Trail

The trail takes the visitor along the route Jackson followed around the Federal flank to launch his surprise attack on May 2. Jackson led two thirds of Lee’s army on an audacious nine mile march to behind the unprepared flank of the Union line. The Flank March Trail is an unpaved road which diverges from the Auto Tour at Stop 6. Most visitors will want to resume the tour at Stop 8.  Markers along the route interpret the march.
