Battle of Chancellorsville • Tour the Battlefield • Monuments & MarkersThe Armies

The Army of Northern Virginia at Chancellorsville was missing a quarter of its infantry at Chancellorsville. Lieutenant General Longstreet with Hood’s and Pickett’s Divisions had been detached to Suffolk, south of Petersburg. Lee hoped to be able to recall them if trouble developed but Hooker moved too fast. The result was a lopsided army with two infantry divisions reporting directly to Lee and four infantry divisions under 2nd Corps commander Thomas Jackson.
