Battle of Chancellorsville • Tour the Battlefield • Monuments & Markers • The Armies

The Chancellor House Site is Stop 3 on the Chancellorsville Battlefield Auto Tour. This strategic intersection of Elys Ford Road with the Orange Plank Road (today’s Plank Road, Virginia Route 3) was the heart of the Union position and General Hooker’s headquarters for much of the battle.
There is a small parking area off Elys Ford Road, and a short walking triail that leads to the ruins of the Chancellor House, which burned down after being set alight by Confederate artillery during the battle.

One Virginia State Historical marker and five wayside markers interpret what went on here:
J40 Battle of Chancellorsville
Chancellor Intersection
Chancellor Slaves
Civilians in the Crossfire
Climactic Struggle
Lee’s Greatest Triumph
