Chancellorsville Tour Stop 8 markerStop 8 on the Chancellorsville Battlefield Auto Tour is north of Plank Road (Virginia Route 3) about 0.6 mile west of the Orange Plank Road intersection.

Stop 8 - Jackson's Flank Attack, on the Chancellorsville Battlefield Auto Tour

Here in the late afternoon of May 2, 1863, Confederate Lieutenant General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson’s 30,000 man 2nd Corps crashed into the exposed flank of Union Major General Oliver O. Howard’s Eleventh Corps. The surprised and unprepared Union line quickly collapsed and fled, spreading panic through the army.

Location of Stop 8

Stop 8 on the Chancellorsville Battlefield Auto Tour is just north of Plank Road (Virginia Route 3) about 0.6 mile west of the intersection with Orange Plank Road and 2.7 miles east of the intersection with Brock Road. Plank Road is a divided highway; eastbound visitors will not be able to turn left into the drive but need to go to a turnaround about 0.1 mile east of the stop and then return westbound. Return to the main highway. You will have to turn right; there is a turn around in 0.3 mile. Then return east 2.0 miles to Stuart Drive. This is the same road as the Visitor Center, but turn right (south). Head south on Stuart Drive 0.5 mile; the parking area is on the right.

There are two mounments and several wayside and historical markers along the Tour Route on the way to Stop 9

The monument to the 154th New York Infantry Regiment is on the south side of Plank Road (Virginia Route 3) about 1.25 miles east of Tour Stop 8.

The Chancellorsville Campaign – May 3, 10:30 historical marker is on the east side of Stuart Drive 180 feet south of Plank Road Plank Road (Virginia Route 3).

The monument to Confederate Brigadier General Elisha Franklin Paxton and three wayside markers are on Stuart Drive about 0.5 mile south of Plank Road (Virginia Route 3).
