Chancellorsville Campaign
May 2, 1863. The head of Jackson’s column reached this point about 12:30 p.m. Eight miles away, the rear, under fire of Federal guns, was closing up near the Catherine Furnace. Jackson planned to turn the column right onto the Plank Road (1 mile ahead). Then General Fitzhugh Lee came galloping south. While the troops rested, the young cavalryman and Jackson advanced to a hill on the Plank Road from which Lee showed him that the Federal right was extended too far west to be outflanked by the chosen route. Quickly changing plans, Jackson continued his march along the Brock Road to the Orange Turnpike. There he turned and swept eastward against the unsuspecting foes.

Stonewall” Jackson’s last dispatch in his own hand. According to tradition Jackson did not dismount but scrawled this note to Lee against the pommel of his saddle.
Location of the markers

Where to next?
These are the last markers along Jackson’s Flank March route. The story of Jackson’s attack continues at Stop 8 on the Chancellorsville Battlefield Auto Tour. Take Brock Road northwest 0.5 mile to the intersection of Orange Plank Road (which is a stop on the Auto Tour of the neighboring Wilderness Battlefield). Turn right (northeast) onto Orange Plank Road and proceed 2 miles to Plank Road, Virginia Route 3. (they have a lot of Plank Roads) Turn left (west) onto Plank Road, Virginia Route 3 (a divided 4-lane highway) for 0.6 mile. Stop 8 will be on the right.
