The Harpers Ferry Visitor Center is 0.2 mile south of U.S. 340 at Shenandoah Street. It has exhibits and a bookstore that includes a great deal of information on the Civil War history of Harpers Ferry. A shuttle bus allows visitors to leave their vehicles and take a short trip to Harpers Ferry’s Lower Town, where there is no parking.

Four wayside markers in the plaza around the visitor center (two of which are duplicated on Bolivar Heights) provide information about the Civil War history of Harpers Ferry:
A Union Predicament
The Trap Closes
Confederate Victory
