Thoburn’s division attacked out of the First Woods, forcing Gordon back in the Second Woods and hitting the flank of Rodes’ Division, now commanded by Cullen Battle. Duval’s division splashed through the swampy bottom lands of Red Bud Run (crossed today by a footbridge for battlefield visitors) and swept across the grounds of Hackwood to threaten Gordon’s flank and rear.
