Kernstown


The First Battle of Kernstown historical marker is south of Winchester along the Valley Pike (U.S. 11). The marker is one of a series of 59 commemorating Virginia Civil War battlefields created during the 1920’s by the Battlefield Markers Association.They were the first highway markers in the State of Virginia.

First Battle of Kernstown

Was fought here Sunday March 23, 1862
Confederates under Gen. T. J. “Stonewall” Jackson
attacked Federals under Gen. James Shields.
The fight was chiefly west of the road
and continued from early afternoon until
nghtfall when Jackson retired with
his first and only reverse.
Confederates engaged, 3,000. Casualties, 718.
Federals engaged, 8,000. Casualties, 590.

Location

The marker is south of Winchester, Virginia on the east side of the Valley Pike (U.S. 11) about 0.2 mile south of Shawnee Drive and 0.25 mile north of Apple Valley Road, in front of the Kernstown United Methodist Church.
