Kernstown


The Battle of Kernstown A9 Virginia historical marker is at the end of Opequon Church Lane, south of Winchester, Virginia. (see map below) It was erected by the Virginia Conservation and Development Commission 1932. The marker is next to the Kernstown Battles marker and the Battle of Kernstown Circle Tour set of markers).

Battle of Kernstown

On the hills to the west, Stonewall
Jackson, late in the afternoon of
March 22, 1862, attacked the Union
force under Shields holding Winches-
ter. After a fierce action, Jackson,
who was greatly outnumbered, with-
drew southward, leaving his dead on
the field. These were buried next
day by citizens of Winchester.
