Front Royal – Monuments and Markers – 1862 Valley Campaign
The Battle of Front Royal historical marker was erected in Front Royal, Virginia in 1927. It is one of a series of 59 commemorating Virginia Civil War battlefields created during the 1920’s by the Battlefield Markers Association. They were the first highway markers in the State of Virginia. The marker is next to the Brorther Against Brother Virginia J17 historical marker (below).

Battle of Front Royal
May 23, 1862. General Jackson surprised
General Bamks’ forces in and around Front
Royal, capturing many prisoners and army
supplies and forcing Banks to flee in disorder
out of the Shenandoah Valley into Maryland.

The markers are in Front Royal on the east side of North Royal Avenue (U.S. 340) inside the angle of the intersection with Chester Street. (38°55’21.2″N 78°11’37.2″W)
