The Stonewall Jackson Died monument is next to the three wayside markers along the north edge of the parking area edge at the Stonewall Jackson Shrine, part of the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park about twelve miles south of Fredericksburg, Virginia.
The monument is one of ten placed by the Reverend James Powers Smith on battlefields around Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County. Smith had been a lieutenant on Jackson’s staff. The monuments were largely paid for by businessman Thomas F. Ryan.
Other Smith monuments are the Lee-Jackson Bivouac at Chancellorsville, Arm of Stonewall Jackson at Ellwood, Stuart and Pelham at Fredericksburg, Jackson on the Field at Fredericksburg, Lee’s Hill at Fredericksburg, Battle of Salem Church, Lee to the Rear at the Wilderness, and Lee’s Headquarters at Spotsylvania.
The monument was originally placed close to the railroad tracks in order to be visible to passengers using the station. After autos became the dominant mode of vacation travel the monument was moved to its present location in the 1960s. The last two lines about Jackson’s burial in Lexington were added in response to the many questions from visitors asking if Jackson were buried nearby.
