The Battle of New Market monument is in the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park outside of New Market, Virginia. The marker is one of a series of 59 commemorating Virginia Civil War battlefields created during the 1920’s by the Battlefield Markers Association. They were the first highway markers in the State of Virginia.

Was fought here Sunday morning
May 15, 1864
The Confederates under Gen. J. C. Breckinridge
were victorious
over the Federals under Gen. Franz Sigel
The decisive incident of the battle
was the heroic capture of the Federal battery
by the V.M.I. cadets

Location
The marker is in the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, in the middle of the turn-around at the end of the George R. Collins Parkway. (38°39’58.6″N 78°39’58.1″W) The Collins Parkway can be reached from Old Cross Road at New Market immediately to the west of Interestate 81 exit 178. There is an admission fee for the park.
