The Battle of Port Republic JD10 Virginia historical marker was erected in 1941 by the Virginia Conservation Commission. The marker is about 100 yards north of the Last Battle of Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign wayside marker and 175 yards north of the Struggle for the “Coaling” wayside marker.

Battle of Port Republic
The cross road here roughgly divides the Confederate and Union lines in the battle of JUne 9, 1862. Jackson attacked Shields, coming southward to join Fremont, but was repulsed. Reinforced by Ewell, Jackson attacked again and drove Shields from the field. At the same time he burned the bridge at Port Republic, preventing Fremont from coming to Shields’ aid.

The marker is on the southeast side of the SE Side Highway (U.S. 340) 2.2 miles northeast of Port Republic Road and just past the intersection for Ore Bank Road. (38°18’07.4″N 78°46’02.1″W)
