The Hackwood Park Virginia historical marker was erected in 1988 by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Historic Resources.

From the marker:

A38
Hackwood Park

One mile east* is the site of the
Hackwood Estate House, built in
1777 by General John Smith. Docu-
ments reveal that the Hackwood
House caught fire during the Third
Battle of Winchester. Union troops
used the buildings on the site for a
hospital, September 19, 1864.

* Since the sign was relocated due to highway construction Hackwood House is now one mile south of the sign. It can be seen from the Civil War Trust’s Battle of Third Winchester trails off Red Bud Road.
