A monument to Union Major General Jesse Reno is on Reno Monument Road at the summit of Fox’s Gap on the South Mountain battlefield in Maryland. (map)
Major General Reno commanded the Ninth Army Corps at South Mountain while its nominal commander, Major General Ambrose Burnside, temporarily commanded a wing of the army. Reno was mortally wounded by friendly fire in the darkness at the end of the battle.
