Sutherland Station


The Battle of Sutherland monument is on the west side of Namozine Road (Route 708) at Sutherland. (see map below) The monument is next to the Sutherland Station – Confederate Defense Crumbles wayside marker and the Lee’s Retreat – Sutherland Station tour marker.

The Battle of

Sutherland

April 2, 1865

Dedicated in sacred memory to those
valiant Confederates who remained
steadfast to the end, and who gave their
last full measure of devotion in defense
of their homeland. Here the Confederates,
under the Generals Wilcox and Heth,
made a gallant stand, only to be overcome
by overwhelming numbers.

The Battle of Sutherland monument is on the west side of Namozine Road (Route 708) just north of Cox Road (US 460) about 4.2 miles west of Interstate 85. (37°11’48.5″N 77°33’52.3″W)
