Sutherland Station


The Lee’s Retreat – Sutherland Station tour marker is on the west side of Namozine Road (Route 708) just north of Cox Road (US 460) about 4.2 miles west of Interstate 85. (37°11’48.8″N 77°33’52.1″W)  A wayside marker and monument are next to this marker.

Sutherland Station
April 2, 1865

Confederate troops formed a battle line along Cox Road to protect the South Side Railroad, but were overwhelmed after three attacks. This engagement enabled Grant’s forces to sever Lee’s last supply line, causing him to abandon Petersburg that night.
