Winchester National Cemetery


The granite monument to the 13th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment is in Winchester National Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia. (see map belowThe 13th Connecticut was part of the 19th Army Corps, who served in Lousiana from 1862 and 1863. In the summer of 1864 they were brought to Virginia to reinforce Grant’s Siege of Petersburg, but after Jubal Early’s Raid on Washington they instead were added to Sheridan’s Army of the Shenandoah. Colonel Charles D. Blinn commanded the regiment in the battles of Third Winchester, Fisher’s Hill and Cedar Creek.

The right side of the monument  is inset with the symbol of the Nineteenth Army Corps. The left side, completely covered by shrubbery, has the seal of the State of Connecticut.

Location

Winchester National Cemetery is on the east side of Winchester, Virginia. It is about 3/4 mile east of the center of town and one mile west of exit 315 of Interstate 81 on National Avenue, Virginia Route 7. (39°11’05.8″N 78°09’22.7″W) A short driveway leads through the entry gate on the north side of the cemetery to a very small parking area next to the superintendant’s lodge. The monument is in the southwest quadrant of the cemetery.
