Third Battle of
Winchester

Near here Early, facing east,
took his last position on Septem-
ber 19, 1864. About sundown he
was attacked and driven from
it, retreating south. Presidents
Rutherford B. Hayes and William
McKinley served in this engage-
ment on the Union side.

Location

Winchester National Cemetery is on the east side of Winchester, Virginia. It is about 3/4 mile east of the center of town and one mile west of exit 315 of Interstate 81 on National Avenue, Virginia Route 7. (39°11’05.9″N 78°09’22.8″W) A short driveway leads through the entry gate on the north side of the cemetery to a very small parking area next to the superintendant’s lodge. The marker is on the north side of the cemetery next to the parking area.
