First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas)
July 21, 1861
The First Battle of Bull Run (if you were from the North) or Manassas (if from the South) was the first major battle of the Civil War, but was relatively small. The Confederacy brought a little over 32,000 men to the field, while the Union brought a little over 28,000.

Second Battle of Bull Run (Second Manassas)
August 28-30, 1862
Thirteen months later the second battle involved over twice as many men, with 70,000 Northerners facing 55,000 Southerners. Both armies had different commanding generals, but many of the participants from 1861 returned a year later.
