About Wade Hampton

Wade Hampton III was one of the wealthiest men in the South at the beginning of the Civil War. He owned thousands of acres in South Carolina and other states, owned thousands of slaves, and was a state senator. Hampton raised and paid for the Hampton Legion, a combined arms unit of infantry, cavalry and artillery. With no military education of training, he proved himself to be a natural leader and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General.
At First Manassas Hampton brought the infantry and cavalry companies of his Legion forward to reinforce the retreating Confederate line, buying time for Stonewall Jackson’s Brigade to come up and turn the tide. Hampton was wounded leading a charge against a Union battery, having a bullet crease his forehead. He would be wounded five more times before the war was over.
