Heth’s Salient is Stop 7 on the Spotsylvania Battlefield Auto Tour.

As the fighting in the Mule Shoe continued on May 12 both sides tested the other on the eastern flank. The result was a bloody meeting engagement here between the men of Burnside’s Union Ninth Corps and men of Longstreet’s Confederate First Corps.

There is a monument and a wayside marker at the Tour Stop:
Monument to the 17th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment (see more)
Heth’s Salient wayside marker (see more)
Tour Stop Seven along with the monument to the 17th Michigan and the Heth’s Salient wayside marker are on the south side of Burnside Drive about 0.45 mile east of Tour Stop 6. (38°12’50.2″N 77°35’14.8″W)

Directions to the next stop on the Auto Tour:
Continue east on Burnside Drive about a mile. Stop Eight is on the right side just before it ends at Courthouse Road.
