The Arm of Stonewall Jackson monument is about 180 yards south of Ellwood on the Wilderness battlefield. (see map below) It is next to the ‘Stonewall Jackson’s Arm‘ wayside marker, which tells the story of how Jackson’s arm came to be buried here.
The monument is one of ten placed by the Reverend James Powers Smith on battlefields around Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County. Smith had been a lieutenant on Jackson’s staff who married the daughter of Ellwood’s owner. Other Smith monuments on this website are Lee-Jackson Bivouac at Chancellorsville, Stuart and Pelham at Fredericksburg, Battle of Salem Church, Lee to the Rear at the Wilderness, Lee’s Headquarters at Spotsylvania, and Stonewall Jackson died at Guinea Station.
