The monument to Confederate Colonel James D. Nance is on the south side side of Orange Plank Road. Colonel Nance commanded the 3rd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry. He was killed leading his regiment in Longstreet’s attack on May 6 , “pierced by 5 balls.”

There is no pull-off at the monument and the road is very busy with high speed traffic. The safest way to view the monument may be to park at the last pull-off on Hill-Ewell Drive and walk down the 220 yards along Orange Plank Road.
