Before Ayres’ Division reached the trenches along White Oak Road the Confederate brigades of McGowan, Hunton and Stansel under the command of Major General Bushrod Johnson moved out of the defenses to launch a counterattack. They struck Ayres head-on and overlapped the Union line on both flanks. Ayres’ line quickly crumbled and headed for the rear.
