Ayres’ men retreated into and through Crawford’s division, disorganizing his line. The Confederate attackers were right on their heels as well as overlapping both flanks, and Crawford’s men quickly followed Ayres to the rear. Bushrod Johnson advanced Wise’s Virginia brigade to cover the flank of his main attack.

Behind Warren’s withdrawing men two more Union divisions, Griffin’s of the 5th Corps and Miles’ of the 2nd, moved out of the trenches and formed line of battle.
