About Joist Hite
In1731 Joist Hite liquidated his holdings in Pennsylvania and purchased 40,000 acres in the Shenendoah Valley, adding an additional 10,000 acres that fall. He led 15 families there, cutting a wagon road along an ancient Native American path, which was the start of the Great Wagon Road. They became the first European settlers west of the Blue Ridge.
