Scale Model of Fort Stevens in the Washington Defenses

The Scale Model of Fort Stevens is inside the restored Civil War fort on the north side of Washington D.C. (see map below) The model was placed in September of 1936 by the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War in honor of the Veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic. Part of the fort had just been newly reconstructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

The model shows an aerial view of the fort and shows its embankments, ditches, gun platforms, troop quarters and storage buildings. Only part of the original fort was reconstructed, the north and west walls and one of its ammunition magazines.

Location of the Scale Model

The Scale Model of Fort Stevens is at Fort Stevens Park in northern Washington D.C. near the corner of 13th Street NW and Quackenbos Street NW. The model is centered behind the north parapet and the gun emplacements. (38°57’52.0″N 77°01’44.6″W)
