Auto Tour Stop 3Stop Three on the Five Forks Battlefield Auto Tour is the Five Forks Intersection.

The corner at Five Forks on the Five Forks battlefield near Petersburg, Virginia

A National Park Visitor Information Center was in a small building on the west side of the intersection. The building was removed when the new Information Center was completed a short distance south on Courthouse Road.

The Five Forks intersection was Grant’s Strategic objective. The Southside Railroad is less than three miles to the north from here on Courthouse Road (known as Ford’s Road during the battle).

This was the center of the Confederate defences. Three cannon under Colonel Pegram reinforced the Confederate infantry here. The line was able to hold off attacks by Union cavalry advancing up Courthouse Road, called Dinwiddie Court House Road at the time of the Civil War. But Union infantry attacked from the flank and the rear. The Confederate position collapseed in a flurry of confused fighting that left Pegram mortally wounded.

A small wooden marker a short distance away in front of a small set of fence rails shows where Pegram is believed to have fallen.

Two monuments and two wayside markers are at the intersection, along with a simple marker labelled, “Pegram.”
