The 6th Corps Falls Back

The Confederate divisions of Kershaw, Evans and Ramseur moved north across Belle Grove plantation and the boggy stream of Meadow Brook, pusheding Wheaton’s and Keifer’s divisions behind the Sixth Corps camps. Getty’s Division of the Sixth Corps established itself on a ridge northwest of Middletown that held the city’s cemetery.

Pegram’s Division moved out of is reserve position where it had been following Ramseur and Evans, and moved toward Getty’s men on the ridge. They were joined by Wharton’s small division, which had moved east along the Valley Pike as the main Confederate attacking force clear it.

Merritt’s and Custer’s large cavalry divisions moved from the right flank into the rear of the withdrawing Union forces. Merritt was ordered to cover the right flank while Custer was to take position near the crucial Valley Pike and cover the disorganized Union 8th Corps.
