The Battle of Cedar Creek marker at Belle Grove Road is one of a series of 59 commemorating Virginia Civil War battlefields created during the 1920’s by the Battlefield Markers Association. Historian Douglas Southall Freeman was one of the founders of the association and wrote most of the text for the markers. They were the first highway markers in the State of Virginia. (see map below).

From the marker:

The Battle of Cedar Creek

Fought on these hills and fields, Oct 19, 1864.
Gen. Jubal A. Early’s 22,000 Confederates
attacked Gen. Philip H. Sheridan’s 60,000
Federals. The first assault a surprise flank
movement by Gen. John B. Gordon, was a
Confederate success. This advantage not
being followed up, enabled Gen. Sheridan
to rally and win the victory.
