The Brawner Farmhouse houses the Brawner Farm Interpretive Center.
Brawner Farm (Groveton) is Stop One on the Manassas Battlefield Driving Tour. It is on the west side of the battlefield park. The Brawner farmhouse, a postwar restoration on the foundations of the civil-war era structure, has been made into the Brawner Farm Interpretive Center, with a number of exhibits about the battle and area history. There are rest rooms at the parking area.
It was here that Major General Thomas J. Jackson opened the Battle of Manassas by leaving concealment to attack the passing Federal command of Brigadier General John Gibbon. A brutal stand up firefight ensued that lasted until darkness.
The farmhouse is the trailhead for several hiking trails. These connect with Battery Heights at Stop two, and with the Deep Cut at Stop Seven.
The fighting on the Brawner Farm was the first day of the 1862 battle, but was so isolated from the rest of the rest of the activities of the day that it is often referred to as its own battle, the Battle of Brawner’s Farm or the Battle of Groveton.
