Confederate Battery 5 is Stop One on the Petersburg Eastern Front Auto Tour. It is also the site of the National Park Visitor Center. (see map below)

Tour Stop One is the beginning of a loop trail to Battery 5 and to the siege mortar ‘Dictator’
Battery 5 was captured during the initial Union attack on Petersburg on June 15, 1864, and was incorporated into the Union fortifications.

The Visitor Center is at Stop One on the Auto Tour
Location of Stop One – Confederate Battery 5 and the Visitor Center
Stop One on the Auto Tour is at the northern end of Siege Road, the Petersburg Eastern Front park road. (37°14’37.3″N 77°21’24.4″W) The park road can be reached from Virginia Highway 36, Oaklawn Boulevard.
From Interstate 95 it is about 2.5 miles to the park road. Take Exit 69 for Wythe Street. Stay in the lane of the exit ramp which exits onto Wythe Street heading east. Wythe Street curves and merges into Washington Street, which turns into Oaklawn Boulevard as it leaves the city. The exit for the park is marked by a large Petersburg National Battlefield sign.
