The Hare House Site marker was on the walking trail about 300 yards west of the parking area at Fort Stedman, Stop Five on the Petersburg National Battlefield Eastern Front Auto Tour. All of the land around Fort Stedman belonged to the Hare farm. Artist Alfred Waud sketched the house in July of 1864. His sketch, which appeared on the marker, is in the Library of Congress.
Note: the marker has been removed, but is included here for historical reference.

Text from the marker
Hare House SIte
About this house swirled the tide of battle
on June 18, 1864, and during “Lee’s Last
Grand Offensive,” March 25, 1865.

Artist Alfred Waud sketched the Hare House in July of 1864 shortly after Union forces captured the area. It would remain on the front lines of the Siege of Petersburg for nine and a half months. A depression in the ground is its only remnant.
